Michael Muff (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) scored five goals and scooped up four groundballs as the Centenary University men's lacrosse team lost its second straight game to Neumann University, 11-9 on Saturday afternoon.
Chase Fraser netted a hat-trick for the Knights who improve to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Sophomore
Chris Snow (Roxbury, N.J. / Roxbury) totaled four points on three assists and one goal for the Cyclones who fall to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the CSAC.
Neumann never trailed in the contest, including scoring five of the first six goals in the first half. Freshman
Robert Amanto (Avon Grove, Pa / Avon Grove) scored an unassisted goal with 1:34 remaining in the first quarter to keep Centenary within striking distance at 2-1. The Knights opened the second quarter with three unanswered goals, before the Cyclones responded with back-to-back goals in less than a minute from Muff and senior
Luke Tremont (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) that cut Neumann's advantage to 5-3. Fraser scored two of his three goals in the opening stanza, including a goal with just over a minute to play before halftime. The Knights held a 6-3 lead at intermission.
The third quarter proved to be fairly even for both sides as each team netted three goals apiece in the quarter. The Clones got two more goals from Muff and one from junior
Michael Balsamo (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Memorial), but trailed 9-6 entering the fourth.In the final quarter, Muff scored another two along with a goal and assist from Snow as the Cyclones cut the lead to 11-9, but ran out of time in the end.
Freshman
Chris Howell (Bear, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) went 19-for-23 on faceoffs, which tied a single game record set by
Josh Caven in 2012. Howell also finished with a game-high nine groundballs. Junior
Nolan Gottshall (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) totaled six groundballs and two caused turnovers, while fellow classmate
Spencer Stachowiak (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) scooped up seven groundballs. Junior
James Iwanicki (Gloucester, Mass. / Ipswich) collected four groundballs, while sophomore
Chris Cameron (Waldwick, N.J. / Waldwick) made 10 saves and tallied four groundballs in the loss.
After today's performance, Muff is just seven points away from 100 points for his career.
