Men’s Basketball Falls to Cairn, Clinches Spot in Playoffs

LANGHORNE, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2017)- Junior Rashaan Spencer (Hackettstown, N.J. / Mount Olive) finished with 26 points and four rebounds as the Centenary University men's basketball team fell to Cairn University, 78-66 on Wednesday evening.

Gerroid Doughty II finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Highlanders who improve to 6-18 overall and 4-13 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Sophomore Jake Logue (Manahawkin, N.J. / Southern Regional) finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones who fall to 11-13 overall and 7-10 in the CSAC.

The Cyclones opened the contest by scoring the first seven points, including five from Spencer on a layup and a triple. Cairn responded by taking their first lead of the game at 14-13 during a 14-6 run over a 4:41 span.  After Centenary regained the lead at 19-18 on a triple by senior Kyle Smith (Warwick, N.Y. / Burke Catholic), the Highlanders closed the half on an 18-8 run that propelled them to a 36-27 advantage.

In the second half, the Cyclones were able to cut the deficit down to six on two separate occasions, but that would be the closest Centenary would get as Cairn stretched the lead back to 12 and didn't look back.

Senior Paul Jones (Trenton, N.J. / Ewing) pulled down 13 rebounds, while both junior Hamp Smith (Allentown, Pa. / William Allen) and K. Smith totaled eight points apiece. Jeremiah Harris totaled 16 points and six rebounds, while Zachary Dolton finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Cairn in the victory.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones clinched the sixth seed in the CSAC playoffs and will travel to the loser of Saturday's game between Cabrini University and Gwynedd-Mercy University on Monday, Feb. 20th.

Head Coach Tim Fusina and the Cyclones will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18th, hosting the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University on senior day at 4:00 p.m. Before the game, Coach Fusina and his staff will honor seniors Zachary Duymich (Millstone Township, N.J. / Allentown), Jones, Smith, and Justen Davis (Edison, N.J. / Wardlaw-Hartridge).
