Valentina Suizzo (North Haledon, N.J. / Eastern Christian) and sophomore
Storm Spooner (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) combined for 19 digs as the Centenary University volleyball team dropped a Colonial States Athletic Conference match to Clarks Summit University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-10) on Thursday evening.
Kara Brown totaled 12 kills, eight digs and four aces for the Defenders who improve to 5-15 overall and 2-4 in the CSAC. Junior
Melissa Krueger (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) totaled six assists and three digs for the Cyclones who fall to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in the CSAC.
Despite the numbers posted by CSU, the Defenders didn't completely dominate the evening. Clarks won the first two sets with identical 25-14 scores as the match entered a third set.
In that set, Centenary fought extremely hard during the opening 10 points. A kill and an ace from Spooner gave the Cyclones a 4-2 lead and a 6-4 advantage. CSU regained the lead at 10-7, but Centenary rallied behind back-to-back points from senior
Amanda Fullem (Linden, N.J. / Mother Seton). The set remained deadlocked at 10-10. CSU responded with 15 straight points from Alexa Wagner to close the set and the match.
Wagner finished with 15 digs, nine assists and eight aces, while Grace Evans totaled 10 kills and Molly Ayala recorded 18 assists in the victory. Fullem and freshman
Leandra Garcia (Plainfield, N.J. / Central Jersey College Prep) totaled two kills apiece, while sophomore
Nicci Veras (Newark, N.J. / Shabazz) tallied five digs and one kill in the loss.
