Baseball Falls to Gwynedd-Mercy on Senior Day


ALLAMUCHY, N.J. (May, 9, 2016)- Junior Nick Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) drove in two runs as the Centenary College baseball team dropped its final contest of the regular season to the Griffins of Gwynedd-Mercy University, 11-4. The Griffins improve to 19-19 overall and 10-8 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference, while the Cyclones finish their regular season at 19-14 overall and 9-9 in the CSAC.

Centenary chased the lead all afternoon, as Gwynedd-Mercy scored 11 runs on 17 hits, including two homeruns from Chris Hens. The Griffins got a huge lift from the heart of the batting order, as the 2, 3, 4, and 5 hitters combined for 12 hits and eight RBI's

Gwynedd-Mercy held a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, as the Cyclones evened the contest at 4-4 with three runs on one hit, including a two RBI single by Daniele to score junior Sal Smith (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) and senior Nick Koffel (Perkiomenville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley).

The Cyclones momentum quickly swung back to the Griffins in the eighth, as Hens homered to regain the lead at 6-4.  Gwynedd added to their lead in the ninth with five runs on five hits.

Senior Chris Ohlwelier (Verona, N.J. / Verona) and freshman Casey Brown (Easton, Pa. / Easton Area) both finished 2-for-4, while sophomores John Tierney (West Milford, N.J. / West Milford) and Kevin Sensale (Bartonsville, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East) along with junior JP Trotman (Riverton, N.J. / Life Center Academy) all recorded one hit apiece.

Before the game, Head Coach Scott Kushner and his staff honored seniors Koffel, Robert Aromando (Clinton, N.J. / North Hunterdon), Joe Frankosky (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional), Ryan Kanner (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Memorial), Travis Eldridge (Blairstown, N.J. / North Warren Regional), Jimmy Kraivec (Sayreville, N.J. / Sayreville War Memorial) and Ohlweiler.
