HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Apr. 2, 2016)– What a day at Allamuchy Green Acres Park, as the Centenary College baseball team swept a doubleheader against Immaculata University, both in dramatic walk-off fashion.
In game one, Centenary won 6-5 on a walk-off single from junior
Nick Daniele (Colts Neck, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic). In game two, the Cyclones rallied to tie the game at 3-3 and then won in spectacular fashion with senior
Nick Koffel (Perkiomenville, Pa. / Perkiomen Valley) blasting his first career home run/grand slam in the bottom of the ninth.
The first game was a back-and-forth affair, with the lead changing six times. Freshman
Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus) went a 6.0 solid innings as the starter, allowing only one earned run (four unearned), one walk and six punch outs.
Koffel smacked a two RBI double, which gave the Cyclones a 3-1 lead. Fielding errors later in the inning by the Cyclones allowed Immaculata to take a 4-3 lead in the third. In the fifth, sophomore
Kevin Sensale (Bartonsville, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East) would bring in Koffel to tie the game at 5-5, before Daniele's dramatics in the bottom of the seventh.
If the first game wasn't dramatic enough, the second one blew away all expectations. Entering the seventh, the Cyclones trailed 3-2. Sophomore
Sean Donovan (Howell, N.J. / Howell) stepped to the plate with two outs and Sensale on second. He ripped a frozen rope between second and third to bring in Sensale and tie the game at 3-3.
It was the extra innings where things really went crazy. In the top of the ninth, Immaculata had a man on third and one out. DiDomenico blasted a ball to center field, which was caught by sophomore
Michael Caprari (Candor, N.Y. / Owego Free Academy). Caprari threw the ball back to the plate in order to get the tag-runner. The ball got to Donovan right when Kalamets was crossing the plate, which caused a collision between Donovan and Kalamets. The ball squirted to the backstop, but the umpire ruled the runner was out on contact due to the small time Donovan held onto the throw from Caprari.
The call gave the Cyclones that extra bit of adrenaline they needed, as freshman
Casey Brown (Easton, Pa. / Easton Area) started off the bottom of the ninth with a double. After two walks and a strikeout left the bases loaded, Koffel decided to go for the dramatic option. The leadoff man blasted a pitch over the right field wall for the walk-off Grand Slam.
Head Coach
Scott Kushner and the Cyclones will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 5, against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City College at 3:30 p.m.
