Anthony Bailey (Florida, N.Y. / SS Seward) scored the go ahead basket with 13 seconds remaining as the Centenary College Men's Basketball team defeated Marywood University, 73-69.
Sophomore
Rashaan Spencer (Hackettstown, N.J. / Mount Olive) made four triples and finished with 21 points for the Cyclones who improve to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Shane Letthand finished with 20 points for the Pacers who fall to 5-15 overall and 1-12 in the CSAC.
Despite trading baskets with Marywood in the first half, Centenary was able to take a 13 point lead behind the play of Spencer and junior
Paul Jones (Trenton, N.J. / Ewing). Spencer and Jones went a combined 4-for-7 from downtown and totaled 18 of the Cyclones 40 first half points. Junior
Kyle Smith (Warwick, N.Y. / Burke Catholic) had another good performance in limited minutes, as he made two triples and totaled six points in the opening stanza.
Marywood continued to chip away at the lead from the free throw-line, by closing the half on a 6-0 run and Centenary held a 40-33 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, Marywood used a 16-6 run that carried over from the first half to close Centenary's lead to 45-43 with 17:17 remaining. Centenary responded with a 12-0 run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 57-43 with 12:58 remaining. The Pacers answered back by completely erasing the Cyclones lead with a 20-6 run to tie the game at 63 with 4:29 remaining.
Marywood attempted to get some breathing room, as Tip Swartz connected from downtown and Letthand made a free-throw to give the Pacers a 69-66 lead with 1:10 remaining. After missing the second free-throw, Spencer completed the old-fashion three point play on the other end to even the game at 69 with 1:02 remaining.
The Pacers went scoreless in the final two minutes, as Centenary closed the game on a 7-1 run with junior
Zachary Duymich (Millstone Township, N.J. / Allentown) recording a block on a Swartz's jumper and then icing the game from the free-throw line with three second remaining.
Bailey finished with only three points, but added eight rebounds and six assists, while Jones poured in 14 points. Cory Callejas made three triples and finished with 11 points for the Pacers.
