HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Feb. 6, 2016) – On Saturday afternoon, the Centenary College men's basketball team were unable to overcome arch rival Cabrini College, as they were defeated by the final of 78-71.
In the first half, the Cyclones went on a 12-0 run after being down 19-9 early. However, on the heels of 20 rebounds and 18 points from Tyheim Monroe, the Cavaliers were able to stick with the Cyclones and take control in the second half.
Centenary took a 37-35 lead at halftime, which could have been more, but a couple of late buckets pulled the Cavaliers to within two points at the break. Cabrini took advantage of several Cyclone turnovers in the second half, as Cabrini's lead ballooned to as large as 13 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Cyclones didn't quit, as they slowly regained the momentum in the game, with back-to-back triples from junior
Zachary Duymich (Millstone Township, N.J. / Allentown) and sophomore
Rashaan Spencer (Hackettstown, N.J. / Mount Olive) to pull Centenary to within four points with just 2:30 remaining. Unfortunately, that's as close as the Cyclones would get, as a couple of costly foul calls, and made free throws allowed Cabrini to ice the game.
Duymich didn't score a basket until five minutes remaining in the game, but ended up leading the Cyclones in scoring with 14 points, while senior
Anthony Bailey (Florida, N.Y. / SS Seward) came close to a double-double with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Head Coach
Tim Fusina and the Cyclones will now head on the road to play another tough opponent in Neumann University on February 10
