Big First Half Propels Men’s Basketball to Victory over Marywood


SCRANTON, Pa. (Nov. 30, 2016)- Junior Rashaan Spencer (Hackettstown, N.J. / Mount Olive) finished with 24 points, including 14 in the first half, and nine rebounds as the Centenary University men's basketball team won their third straight game with a 77-63 victory over Marywood University on Wednesday evening.

Senior Paul Jones (Trenton, N.J. / Ewing) finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones who improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Dexter Shy finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for the Pacers who remain winless at 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the CSAC.

Centenary was deadly from long range in the opening stanza as the Cyclones knocked down eight triples and scored 44 points. Sophomore Jake Logue (Manahawkin, N.J. / Southern Regional) and senior Kyle Smith (Warwick, N.Y. / Burke Catholic) both tallied three triples in the first half, as Centenary used a 17-4 run that stretched an early 9-7 lead out to a 26-11 advantage with 9:24 remaining. The Cyclones collected 10 steals, which turned into 17 points and extended the lead to 44-26 with 1:32 remaining.

In the second half, Jones scored 14 of his 16 points and Spencer added another 10 as Marywood cut Centenary's lead to as close as eight midway through the latter 20. Jones scored all 14 points over the final nine minutes which propelled the Cyclones to its second straight conference victory. Smith finished with 12 as he connected on his fourth triple of the game.

Logue finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while senior Zachary Duymich (Millstone Township, N.J. / Allentown) finished with three steals and three rebounds. Jeremy Ringland totaled 11 points, five rebounds and five blocks, while Zach Tinkham added nine points and three rebounds.

Head Coach Tim Fusina and the Cyclones will return to action in Immaculata, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 3rd against the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University at 3:00 p.m.
