Bench Propels Women’s Basketball to Victory over Saint Elizabeth


HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Nov. 23, 2016)- Juniors Rachel Edwards (Phillipsburg, N.J. / Phillipsburg) and Nicole Cartaino (Midland Park, N.J. / Midland Park) combined for 26 points off the bench, as the Centenary University women's basketball team recorded a non-conference victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth, 64-45 on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Mallory George (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) led all scorers with 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Cyclones who improve to 3-1 overall. Deja Ingram finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Eagles who fall to 1-2 overall.

The Cyclones and Eagles struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, as both teams shot below 40.0% from the floor in the opening stanza. The Eagles actually held an early 4-0 lead, but the Cyclones used a 10-0 run to close out the first quarter with a 10-5 lead. Saint Elizabeth hung around with their 66.7% shooting from the free throw line, as Centenary held a 24-18 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Centenary was sparked by an 11-3 run over the final 2:29 of the third quarter, which gave them a 41-30 lead entering the fourth quarter. Edwards scored 14 of her 16 points, while George added 12 in a second half where Centenary shot 78.9% from the charity stripe. Edwards went 4-for-4, George went 6-for-9 and junior Amber Reisenwitz (Cresco, Pa. / Pocono Mountain East) went 5-for-6 from the line in the second half, after not tallying a single free throw in the first.

Reisenwitz finished with seven assists, six rebounds, five points, and four steals, while fellow classmate Julia Presant (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) knocked down two triples and finished with six points. Seniors Heather Yaros (Hopatcong, N.J. / Hopatcong) and Kelsey Barofski (White Township, N.J. / Belvidere) finished with eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Jasmine Poole finished with nine points, six rebounds and three steals, while Rakiyah Sellers added nine points and two rebounds.

Head Coach Rose Haller and the Cyclones will return to action in Scranton, Pa. on Wednesday, Nov. 30th against the Pacers of Marywood University at 6:00 p.m.
