RADNOR, Pa. (Nov. 2, 2016) – Three second half goals, including the game-winner from sophomore
Kara LaPolice (Hopewell, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) helped the third seeded Cyclones of Centenary University women's soccer team knock off the six-time defending champion and second seeded Cavaliers of Cabrini University, 3-0 at Edith Robb Dixon Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Jessie Sharr (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) and junior
Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) both netted goals as the Cyclones improve to 11-8 overall and will advance to Saturday's Championship game against the top seeded Pacers of Marywood University at 1:00 p.m. Four different Cavaliers recorded each one shot apiece for Cabrini who finish their season at 10-7-1.
The opening 45 was tightly contested as both teams only recorded two shots apiece. The game remained scoreless at intermission.
Centenary broke the scoreless tie in the 71
st minute as sophomore
Amanda Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) played a cross to LaPolice into the six yard box, where she headed the ball in for the score. The Cyclones increased their lead to 2-0 in the 83
rd minute, when freshman
Chloe Christopher (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) played a through ball to Sharr who chipped the ball over the keeper for the score.
Even the CSAC Player of the Year netted her second goal in two games, as Pizzuto recorded a free kick goal from 30 yards out in the 88
th minute to close the door and send the Cyclones to the Championship game.
The Cyclones edged the Cavaliers on shots (7-4) and shots on goal (4-0). Sharr took a game-high three shots, while Benoit tallied a shot in the victory. Gabby LeGendre made one save in 90 minutes for the Cavaliers.
