Women’s Soccer Rallies to Defeat Neumann in First Round of CSAC Tournament

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Oct. 31, 2016)- Senior Jessie Sharr (Belvidere, N.J. / Belvidere) and sophomore Amanda Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) both totaled four points as the Centenary University women's soccer team rallied from a two goal deficit to defeat Neumann University, 5-3, in the First Round of the CSAC Tournament on Monday afternoon.

Sharr scored two goals, including the game-winner for the Cyclones who improve to 10-8 overall. Brooke Harvey netted a goal and took two shots for the Knights who finish the season at 9-8-1 overall.

After both sides netted a goal in the opening 45, Neumann started the second half with two goals in a span of six minutes giving the Knights a 3-1 advantage in the 58th minute.

It wouldn't take long for the Cyclones to respond, as less than a minute later, Sharr scored on a header off a pass from Benoit in the 59th minute. Centenary would get the equalizer in the 63rd minute, as freshman Chloe Christopher (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) took a pass from junior Jessica Benoit (Hazlet, N.J. / Raritan) and then beat the defender one-on-one to even the game at 3-3.

The Benoit sisters would have a hand in Sharr's game-winner as J. Benoit played a free kick ball to A. Benoit who proceeded to play the ball wide for Sharr, who tapped the ball off her right foot for the go ahead goal in the 70th minute.

Junior Emily Pizzuto (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) was named the CSAC Player of the Year earlier in the day and she proved why she deserved the honor as she calmly nailed an insurance penalty kick goal in the 86th minute.

Benoit also scored a goal and took a game-high six shots, while Christopher and senior Korin Karszen (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport South Manor) each added an assist. Junior Kaitlin Marold (Edison, N.J. / Edison) finished with five saves in 90 minutes of work. Lexi Casper recorded a team-high three shots, while Anna Attardi made six saves in 78:43 minutes logged in net.

Head Coach Kevin Davies and the third seeded Cyclones will return to action in Radnor, Pa. on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd, against the second seeded Cavaliers of Cabrini University in the Semifinals of the CSAC Tournament at 7:00 p.m.
