Spells Collects Nine Digs as Volleyball Falls to NJCU

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2015)- Junior Na'imah Spells (Irvington, N.J./Irvington) collected nine digs as the Centenary College volleyball team dropped a non-conference contest to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University, 3-0.

Georgina Rayo finished with seven kills as the Gothic Knights improved to 4-1. Junior Jamie Bierbaum (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) collected four kills for the Cyclones, who fall to 0-6 overall.

The first set was a back and forth affair, as freshman Giani Montalvo (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth), Bierbaum and Spells all collected aces. NJCU rallied behind Rayo to close the set, as she recorded two kills down the stretch.In the second set, freshman Zoey Woody (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) served on three straight points giving the Cyclones a 3-0 advantage. The Gothic Knights recovered from the early deficit to run away with the set.In the final set, the Cyclones fought hard but had no answer for NJCU's size upfront. Rachel McIntyre completed the match by serving for eight straight points.

Woody led the Cyclones with seven assists, while McIntyre led the Gothic Knights with 21. Senior Vanessa McKellar (Annadale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) finished with three kills and freshman Krysta Astengo (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton) added two kills. Rayo also had eight digs, while McIntrye added three services and three kills.
Head Coach Kelsey Walter and the Cyclones will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15th, as they will host the Giants of Keystone University at 7:00 p.m.
