Flemington, NJ – The Centenary College baseball team defeated New Jersey City University in a non-conference game by a final score of 20-3. With the win, the Cyclones improve to 14-13 overall, while the Gothic Knights fall to 12-17 on the season.
Centenary wasted no time opening the score as two singles and a walk loaded the bases for
Chris Ohlweiler who cleared them with a triple to right center. Ohlweiler would also come around to score for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Cyclones continued with their momentum at the plate tacking on another three runs off two hits.
Leading 7-1, the Cyclones recorded their biggest inning yet in the bottom of the third with 11 runs off six hits. Centenary's
Nick Daniele highlighted the inning with a double to right scoring teammates
Kevin Sensale and
Kevin Litus. The Cyclone bats were relentless as they batted around and with the bases loaded; Daniele blasted a grand slam over the left field fence for his sixth RBI of the inning.
NJCU managed to push a second run across the plate in the top of the fourth, but Centenary added another two runs after
Ryan Caparoni sent a two-run shot over the right field fence for the 20-2 advantage.
Over the next four innings, both teams would stay off the board until NJCU scored a run in the top of the ninth (20-3).
As a team, the Cyclones belted out 15 hits which included five doubles, one triple and two homeruns, while working nine walks.
Senior
Joe Forcellini went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI's, while Ohlweiler collected a pair of hits driving in six runs.
John Tierney also added a hit, while
Kevin Litus and
Ryan Kanner each tallied one hit.
Daniele went a perfect 3-for-3 with six RBI's, while Caparoni also went 3-for-3 driving in two runs.
From the mound,
Eric Thorpe threw five innings giving up just two runs, while striking out five batters.
Jimmy Kraivec started the game and earned the win.
Centenary will hit the road to take on New York University in New York, NY for a non-conference game beginning at 6pm.
