Hackettstown, NJ – The Centenary men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference game to Whittier College this afternoon by a final score of 6-4. With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 1-5 overall, while the Poets improve to 3-2 on the season.
Whittier quickly opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the game before Centenary's
Anthony Biango answered to knot the score at 1-1. Whittier's Foster Cunningham, put the Poets back on top at the 8:42 mark.
After a scoreless second quarter, Whittier fired three straight goals to start the third quarter and push ahead for a 5-1 advantage.
Centenary would register two consecutive goals courtesy of
Trevor Krupinski to get the Cyclones within two (5-3) heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Whittier's Maxwell Jones would notch his third goal of the day at the 11:22 mark for the extra cushion (6-3).
Late in the quarter,
Michael Balsamo was able to fire a shot into the net with 45 seconds left to play, but the Poets would hang on for the 6-4 win.
Whittier outshot Centenary 38-17, while
Kevin Switzer racked up 16 saves in the goal for the Cyclones.
Centenary will open conference play Monday March 24
th against defending CSAC champions, Cabrini College beginning at 4pm.
