Hackettstown, NJ – Samantha Sysak scored once in regulation and added the golden goal in overtime as the Centenary College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over CSAC opponent Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cyclones, who suffered back-to-back CSAC setbacks, are now 8-2 in the conference with a five-game win streak.
In the first 45 minutes of play, Centenary created chances to score with an 8-1 shot advantage, but could not connect as Griffin Goalie, Jess Tadley made four first half saves.
The second half, Centenary turned up the pressure even more tacking on another 12 shots. Gwynedd keeper denied three consecutive shots, including two point blank shots by
Laura Potter and
Samantha Sysak midway through the second half to keep the game scoreless.
In the 69
th minute, Gwynedd's Meghan Petroski broke the stalemate with an unassisted goal to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones, however, kept their composure as they continued to produce shots on target and it paid off in the 87
th minute as
Samantha Sysak finished off a feed from
Emily Pizzuto into the lower right corner and away from Tadley to knot the game at one apiece and sending the game into overtime.
In the second overtime, Centenary's leading scorer, Sysak, would connect with her second goal of the day on a diving header and
Jessica Benoit would record the assist on the play.
Senior goalie
Megan Williams, tallied one save, while Tadley finished the day with an astounding 17 saves.
With the win, Centenary now sits in the #2 spot in the CSAC Conference standings with an overall record of 9-7-1 and 8-2 in the league play, while Gwynedd drops to 10-6-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the CSAC.
Centenary closes out their regular season with a CSAC home match against Rosemont College October 30
