HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Shane Gambarony recorded a hat trick and added two assists as the Centenary University men's soccer team closed out non-conference play in dominant fashion with a 7-1 victory over York College (N.Y.) Wednesday afternoon at J.E. Reeves Jr. Field.
The Cyclones wasted little time getting on the board. Gambarony opened the scoring just 1:33 into the match before setting up Aedan Dorwart for Centenary's second goal less than four minutes later. Gambarony struck again in the 17th minute to give the Cyclones an early 3-0 advantage.
Dorwart added his second goal of the afternoon in the 22nd minute, finishing off an assist from Quinn Wydner to extend the lead to 4-0. York got one back in the 28th minute on a goal from Christopher Garcia, but Centenary carried a 4-1 advantage into halftime.
The Cyclones continued to control the match after the break. Nicholas Mustacchio scored his first goal of the season in the 53rd minute off Gambarony's second assist of the day, pushing the advantage to 5-1.
Gambarony completed the hat trick in the 73rd minute, converting a penalty kick for Centenary's sixth goal. Ander Dugarte Castillo capped the scoring in the 84th minute with his first goal of the season to secure the 7-1 victory.
Gambarony finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists. He now sits tied for 3rd with most points in a game, with 8. Dorwart added a pair of goals while Mustacchio and Dugarte Castillo also found the back of the net for the Cyclones.
Centenary controlled the offensive numbers with a 28-15 advantage in shots, including a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. The Cyclones also earned 10 corner kicks compared to six for the Cardinals. Gavin Veres made seven saves before Jimmy Curran closed out the victory in goal.
With the win, Centenary improves to 3-6-1 on the season and closes out its non-conference schedule on a high note. They return home on Saturday to honor their 10 seniors before kick off at 1pm.
