HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University women's soccer team generated a season-high 17 shots but was unable to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to Penn State Brandywine Saturday afternoon at J.E. Reeves Jr. Field.
Penn State Brandywine scored the lone goal of the contest in the 10th minute when Lauren McDonnell found the back of the net off an assist from Natalie Santiago.
Centenary responded by putting consistent pressure on the Brandywine defense. Dara Frieder forced a save less than a minute after the goal before Amy Kim, Elizabeth Fogarty and Ava Barry each put attempts on frame later in the opening half. The Cyclones finished the first 45 minutes with a 9-4 advantage in shots but entered halftime trailing, 1-0.
Centenary continued to search for the equalizer throughout the second half. The Cyclones recorded eight more shots, including several opportunities over the final 15 minutes. Nia Hebron put Centenary's final shot on goal in the 85th minute, but Brandywine goalkeeper Adrianna Gorbatuk made the save.
Fogarty led the Cyclones offensively with six shots, while Barry finished with three. Kim and Frieder recorded two shots apiece as Centenary finished with a 17-7 advantage in total attempts and put five shots on goal. Naveah O'Keefe played all 90 minutes in goal, allowing just the one first-half goal while making three saves.
Despite controlling the shot total, the Cyclones were unable to break through as Penn State Brandywine held on for the 1-0 victory. Centenary moves to 0-5 on the season.
