LANCASTER, Pa. – The Centenary University men's soccer team battled Lancaster Bible College through a scoreless opening half before falling, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Donald H. Funk Field.
Centenary created a pair of early opportunities as Aedan Dorwart put a shot on goal in the eighth minute before Shane Gambarony followed with an attempt on frame just over a minute later. Lancaster Bible goalkeeper Micah Dressler stopped both opportunities to keep the game scoreless.The Chargers generated four shots in the opening 45 minutes, but Gavin Veres made two saves to send the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
Centenary continued to pressure early in the second half. Sean Quinones forced a save in the 56th minute before Bryant Morales followed with an attempt in the 64th. Lancaster Bible answered with back-to-back opportunities, including a Riley Bills shot that struck the post before Veres stopped another Bills attempt moments later. Bills eventually broke the scoreless tie in the 67th minute, scoring off an assist from Taylor Gehman to give Lancaster Bible a 1-0 advantage.
The Cyclones continued searching for the equalizer as Gambarony recorded an attempt in the 75th minute. Ander Dugarte Castillo then put a shot on goal in the 85th, but Dressler made the save. Lancaster Bible extended its lead less than a minute later when Jacob Melleby scored off assists from Ruben Reyes and Bills to make it 2-0. Centenary generated two final opportunities in the closing minute from Dorwart and William Kelleher but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Cyclones finished with nine shots, including four on goal. Quinones, Gambarony and Dorwart each recorded two shots, while Dugarte Castillo added an attempt on goal. Veres played all 90 minutes in net and finished with four saves. Lancaster Bible held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
The loss moves Centenary to 2-5-1 on the season.
