PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Centenary University men's soccer team fell to Purchase College, 5-1, Friday evening at Purchase Soccer Field.
The Cyclones (1-3-1) generated 15 shots in the contest, placing 11 on goal, while Jayron Brown highlighted the night by finding the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career.
Purchase got off to a quick start, opening the scoring just 1:09 into the contest when Mason Dilone scored off a feed from Jacob Pence. The Panthers doubled their advantage in the seventh minute on a goal from Christopher Rubio before Pence converted a penalty kick in the 19th minute to give Purchase a 3-0 lead.
Despite the early deficit, Centenary continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half. Sean Quinones, Tony Garcia, Bryant Morales and Raynaldo Hernandez all generated chances for the Cyclones as they looked to cut into the Purchase advantage.
Brown provided another opportunity late in the half, putting a shot on frame in the 43rd minute, but the Panthers kept Centenary off the scoreboard as the Cyclones entered halftime trailing 3-0. Centenary came out aggressively in the second half and broke through at the 52:42 mark. Brown found the back of the net for his first career goal, cutting the Purchase advantage to 3-1.
The Cyclones continued to pressure the Panthers following the goal. Elliot Tillinghast put two attempts on frame during the second half, while Brown and Garcia also generated scoring chances as Centenary looked to cut further into the deficit.Purchase added to its advantage in the 73rd minute when Outman Ait Sidi Ahmed scored off an assist from Dante Spinella. The Panthers added their final goal just over five minutes later as Rene Salmeron-Reyes found the back of the net, with Spinella recording his second assist.
Centenary finished the contest with 15 shots, including 11 on goal. Purchase recorded 18 total shots with six on frame. The Cyclones also held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.Brown and Quinones led the Centenary attack with four shots apiece, with Brown recording the first goal of his collegiate career.
Gavin Veres played all 90 minutes in net for Centenary and recorded one save.
The loss moves the Cyclones to 1-3-1 on the season.
