Cyclones Fall to John Jay at Home

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University men's soccer team battled John Jay College through a scoreless opening half before falling, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at J.E. Reeves Jr. Field.

The Cyclones (1-4-1) generated 13 shots in the contest, including four on goal, while John Jay scored all three of its goals during an eight-minute stretch in the second half.

Both sides created opportunities throughout the opening 45 minutes, but neither was able to break through. Gavin Veres helped keep the Bloodhounds off the board, making three first-half saves. Centenary generated seven shots in the opening period. Sean Quinones recorded the Cyclones' lone shot on goal of the half in the 38th minute, but John Jay goalkeeper Davio Rossi-Levin made the save to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The Cyclones came out looking to take control early in the second half, earning a corner kick just over a minute into the period. Colin Hayes followed with a shot in the 50th minute as Centenary continued to search for the opening goal. John Jay eventually broke the scoreless tie in the 58th minute when Josh Clemas found the back of the net off an assist from Blake Paves.

The Bloodhounds extended their lead less than six minutes later as Karl Menuau scored off a feed from Petur Larusson to make it 2-0. John Jay struck again at the 65:23 mark when Daniel Mansur scored, with Paves recording his second assist of the afternoon.

Centenary continued to push offensively despite the deficit. The Cyclones earned five corner kicks during the second half and put three shots on goal as they looked to get on the scoreboard. Hayes led the Centenary attack with three shots, including two on goal. Ander Dugarte Castillo added two attempts, while Quinones recorded one shot on goal. William Kelleher also placed an attempt on frame.

The Bloodhounds finished with an 18-13 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. John Jay also held a narrow 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Veres played the opening 68:34 in goal for the Cyclones and recorded three saves. Jimmy Curran played the final 21:26 without allowing a goal.

The loss moves Centenary to 1-4-1 on the season.
