Cyclones Drop Second Match of Tri-Meet to Cairn Despite Strong Freshman Showings

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. — August 30, 2025 — Centenary Volleyball wrapped up their season-opening tri-match on Saturday with a four-set loss to Cairn University, 21-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-21. Despite a hot start and some standout individual efforts, the Cyclones couldn't maintain their early momentum against a composed Highlanders squad.

Centenary came out strong, taking the first set 25-21 behind crisp execution and balanced offense. But Cairn adjusted quickly, turning up the pressure from the service line and controlling the net in sets two and three, winning 25-16 and 25-12. The Cyclones fought hard in the fourth, keeping pace throughout, but Cairn pulled away late to close the match 25-21.

While the result didn't land in Centenary's favor, the match highlighted the promise of the program's young core. Freshman libero Rey Bennett continued to impress in her debut weekend, tallying 24 digs to bring her total to a staggering 58 over two matches. She was joined in the back row by fellow freshman Gabriella Miller, who added 14 digs of her own, giving the duo a combined 38 for the match.

Offensively, freshman Meghan McGough led the way with 14 kills, showcasing both power and poise at the net in key moments. Senior captain Poppy Skjonnemand remained a steady presence, contributing 11 kills as she continued her strong start to the season.

The Cyclones leave their opening weekend 0-2 but with plenty of positives to build on as they head into the heart of the non-conference schedule.
