HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –
Mya Burnett and
Alyssa Bizzarro combined for 25 kills to lead the Centenary University volleyball team in a hard-fought 3-1 loss to Cairn University on Wednesday evening.
The Highlanders took the early lead with a 25-16 set one win. Centenary evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 set two victory, it was just the second set the Highlanders lost all season. Cairn battled for 25-19 and 25-20 wins in sets three and four respectively to secure the match.
The match was a back-and-forth contest that featured 21 ties and 10 lead changes. The fourth set was incredible close as the Highlanders and Cyclones fought through eight ties and five lead changes in that stretch.
Bizzarro finished with 13 kills, eight digs, three blocks and two service aces for the Cyclones while Burnett had 12 kills and four digs.
Martina Josifoska led the defensive efforts with 20 digs while
Kim Stallworth contributed 14 assists, eight digs and three service aces. The Cyclones who dropped in 11 service aces on the night were led in that category by
Vanessa Pagano, who had four.
Allison Barnes led Cairn with 17 kills while
Olivia Zepp had 32 assists and eight digs.
Centenary is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when it travels to William Paterson for a tri-match. The Cyclones will take on the host Pioneers at 11 a.m. and Sarah Lawrence at 1 p.m.
