Second Half Rally Lifts Men's Soccer Over Purchase, 4-1

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Kevin Lopez had a goal and two assists to help the Centenary University men's soccer team stage a furious second half rally in a 4-1 win over Purchase College on Thursday afternoon.

Centenary picked up its first win of the season with the victory.

"Obviously its great to get our first win but even better to get it before conference play starts," said head coach Josh Spivack. "Challenging the team with a tough schedule hasn't gone our way and confidence was wavering. The team has battled through and showed how determined they are to get results in the next month."

It was Purchase that struck first in this one. Leo Conte made a long run in and beat the Centenary keeper, who came out to play the ball. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead at the 21:10 mark.

Despite being outshot 10-5 in the first half, Purchase carried that 1-0 lead into the half.

The Cyclones broke through with the equalizer at 53:47. Brian Osorio took a free kick for the Cyclones and lifted it up and over everyone for the goal. It was Osorio's second straight game with the game-tying goal for the Cyclones.

Centenary took it's first lead of the contest at 72:39 as Lopez was able to corral a rebound and punched it home.

The Cyclones' increased their advantage to 3-1 at 76:49 as Kenneth Pinedo was able to head home a ball played in by Lopez on a corner kick.

The home team would tack on one more goal as Mathias O'Neil connected on his first career goal at 83:12. O'Neil's goal also came on a well-executed corner kick that was put into play by Lopez.

Centenary closed out the 4-1 victory.

Andrew Tarkazikis made two saves to earn the win in goal for the Cyclones. Mario Olmedo made three saves in the first 70:05 for Purchase. Travis Stella closed out the game and made two saves in the final 19:55.

Lopez finished with the goal and two assists to lead the Cyclones.

Centenary is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when it opens Atlantic East Conference action by traveling to Marywood for a 7 p.m. game.
