Baseball Tripped Up in Series Opener Against Marymount

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Anthony Vassallo and Paul Links each had three hits and two runs scored but it was not enough as the Centenary University baseball team fell to Marymount University, 13-8 on Friday afternoon in Atlantic East Conference action.

Marymount got the scoring started with a run on a wild pitch in the top of the first.

Centenary responded with a pair of runs in its half of that inning. Brandon Smith lifted a sac fly to center to score a run before Jon Fleck came home on a balk.

Marymount was able to manufacture a big second inning and put nine runs on the board for a 10-2 lead. Jordan Dickson and Jimmy Baker each had a pair of RBIs in the frame.

Centenary scored the next six runs in the game and pulled to within two, 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh.

Vassallo had an RBI single in the third while Fleck had a two-run double in the fourth.

Jake Keenan had an RBI single in the fifth before Chris Hess roped a two-run double to left in the seventh.

Marymount was able to put three runs on the board in the top of the ninth and secured the 13-8 win.

Stephen Gerade got the win in relief as he went 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Zach Gehman took the loss after giving up nine runs on seven hits in an inning plus.

Bryce Smith led the Saint as he went 4-for-4 at the plate while Robby Cable had three hits and three runs scored.

Vassallo had an RBI to go along with his three hits and two runs scored while Smith had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Centenary and Marymount conclude their weekend series with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Our Diamond of Dreams. Centenary will honor seniors Anthony Ranaudo, Fleck, Scott Ducey, Nicholas Grifone, Brian Rapillo and Hess at approximately 11:15 tomorrow pregame.
