Baseball Falls at Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Centenary University baseball team stumbled in doubleheader action at Cairn University on Tuesday afternoon.

The Highlanders battled back from a 3-0 deficit for a 4-3 win in eight innings in game-one. Cairn scored 12 runs in the fourth inning en route to a 23-7 victory in game-two.

Game One Recap (Cairn Won 4-3):
The Cyclones got on the board first with a run in the top of the first. Cole Heitzman's groundout allowed Paul Links to cross the plate.

Centenary added to its lead in the second as Links reached on a fielders choice and Christopher Gass scored on the play. The Cyclones added a second run in the inning as Anthony Vassallo touched the dish on a passed ball.

Cairn tied the game in the bottom of the second as Tyler Warr launched a three-run home run to left center.

Both teams had their chances in the third through seventh innings but neither was able to convert and the game headed to extra innings.

Centenary put a runner on in the top of the eighth but could not get him home.

In the bottom half of the frame, Caleb Edman got on via a walk. He eventually crossed the plate with the winning run as Warr reached on a Cyclone error.

Bryan Stimpson got the win in relief for the Highlanders as he allowed one hit in two innings of work. Matt Oehrlein took the tough luck loss as he gave up one unearned run in four innings with four strikeouts.

Warr led Cairn with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.

Nicholas Gattuso had two hits for the Cyclones while Gass and Vassallo each had a hit and a run scored.

Game Two Recap (Cairn Won 23-7):
The Cyclones went to work early in game-two. Nicholas Grifone's double scored Chase Johnson and Miron Miller in the first. Kevin Zaccareo Jr. and Victor Cardona each had an RBI single in the inning. Mike Roman's sac fly gave the visitors a 5-0 advantage.

Cairn scored four in the bottom half of that frame and cut the Centenary lead to one, 5-4.

The Cyclones weren't done yet as they scored two more in the fourth. Johnson scored on a wild pitch before Zach Revuelta doubled home Grifone.

Unfortunately that was all the scoring the Cyclones could muster in the game. Cairn scored the final 19 runs of the game and secured a 23-7 win.

Dom Maglione got the win as he went four innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits. Jackson Ponzo took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up eight runs on six hits in two thirds of an inning. Jon Fleck made his first career appearance on the mound and got the final two outs, including a strikeout for the Cyclones.

Warr had four hits, four RBIs and four runs scored for Cairn.

Grifone led the Cyclones as he was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Revuelta and Cardona each had two hits and an RBI.

Centenary is back in action on Friday, April 22 when it visits Immaculata for a 3 p.m. game.
