Baseball Falls at Gwynedd Mercy in Atlantic East Action

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Centenary University baseball team played the longest game in the last 10 years of the program but could not hold a lead late and fell to Gwynedd Mercy University in Atlantic East action on Monday.

Gwynedd Mercy scored the final six runs of game-one and claimed an 8-2 victory to start the day. The Cyclones and Griffins then battled for 13 innings in game-two, the most innings played by a Cyclone squad in the last 10 years. Centenary held a lead late in that one but could not hold on as Gwynedd Mercy claimed the 8-7 win.

Game One Recap (Gwynedd Mercy Won 8-2):
Gwynedd Mercy put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first to grab the early lead in this one.

The Cyclones tied things up with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Nick Payne reached on an interference call with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Anthony Vassallo's single put runners on first and third. Chris Hess drove a single to right that scored both runners.

Gwynedd Mercy responded with four runs in the fifth for a 6-2 advantage. The big blow in that inning came from Billy Collins, who had a two-run home run to left.

The home team tacked on two more runs in the sixth and claimed the 8-2 victory.

Trey Livingstone earned the win as he went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Zach Gehman took the loss as he went 4.1 innings and gave up five runs on two hits.

Collins had the one hit and three RBIs for Gwynedd Mercy.

Hess finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones.

Game Two Recap (Gwynedd Mercy Won 8-7 in 13):
Gwynedd Mercy again took the early lead in the game, this time with three runs in the bottom of the second.

Centenary got its offense going and tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. Cole Heitzman was hit by a pitch to force in a run while Hess reached on an error that allowed a run to score and Miron Miller reached on a fielder's choice which allowed the third run to score.

The Cyclones added three more runs in the sixth and took a 6-3 lead in the game. Nicholas Grifone got on via a fielder's choice that allowed Jake Keenan to score. Grifone then touched the dish as Vassallo drove his second home run of the season over the fence in left.

Gwynedd Mercy scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and tied the game at 6-6.

Centenary took a 7-6 lead in the 11th inning as Miller reached on an error and pinch-runner Chase Johnson scored on the play.

However, the Griffins had the answer in the bottom of the 11th as they got a one-out home run and tied the game at 7-7.

Both teams got a runner on in the 12th but neither was able to convert.

Centenary had two runners on in the top of the 13th but couldn't get a runner across the plate.

Gwynedd Mercy used three straight singles in the bottom half of that frame to plate the winning run.

Mitchell Bramsway earned the win on the mound as he went the final 5.2 and allowed one unearned run on four hits. Hess took the tough luck loss for the Cyclones as he tossed five innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits.

T.J. Braiser had three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for Gwynedd Mercy.

Vassallo finished with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Cyclones.

Centenary will be back in action on Thursday, Apr. 14 when it hosts Drew at 3 p.m.
