HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –
Jon Fleck and
Jake Keenan combined for five hits, four RBIs and four runs scored in game one to help the Centenary University baseball team earn a doubleheader split with SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon.
The Cyclones had a season-high 15 hits and scored 10 runs late to secure a 12-2 win in game one. SUNY Cobleskill pounded out 20 hits and scored 19 runs in a 19-2 game two victory.
Game One Recap (Centenary Won 12-2):
The Cyclones got off to a quick start in this one with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.
Nicholas Grifone ripped an RBI double to left center and came around to score on a
Chris Hess single.
SUNY Cobleskill got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth and made it a 2-1 game.
Centenary responded by putting four on the board in the bottom of the fifth, which extended its lead to 6-1. Fleck got things going as he scorched a two-run double into right before Keenan and
Brandon Smith followed with RBI base knocks.
SUNY Cobleskill scored one in the top of the sixth and made it a 6-2 game.
The Cyclones exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and took a 12-2 lead.
Nick Payne led off the frame by ripping his first career home run to left field. Fleck doubled in a run and later scored on Smith's RBI base knock.
Christopher Gass had a two-run double and scored on a wild pitch in the frame.
Yonelvi Puello set the Fighting Tigers down in order in the top of the seventh to close out the 12-2 win.
Anthony Ranaudo got the win with 0.2 innings of scoreless relief work. Puello was impressive in his collegiate debut as he went three innings in relief and gave up one run while striking out four.
Wyatt Palmer took the loss for SUNY Cobleskill after giving up four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Fleck was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Cyclones while Keenan finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Gass went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Game Two Recap (SUNY Cobleskill Won 19-2):
SUNY Cobleskill put three on the board in the top of the first to take an early lead in game two.
The Cyclones got two of those tallies back in the bottom half of the frame. Fleck ripped an RBI single down the right field line and Gass hit a sac fly to left.
SUNY Cobleskill used a two-run single from
Eddy Garcia in the top of the second to extend its advantage to 5-2.
The Fighting Tigers put 14 runs on the board in the final three innings to secure the 19-2 win.
Samuel Gutierrez had a three-run home run and an RBI double in that stretch.
Ethan Straub got the win on the hill for SUNY Cobleskill. He went five innings and allowed just two runs.
Matt Oehrlein took the loss for Centenary after giving up five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Fleck had a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the Cyclones.
Gutierrez had three hits, four RBIs and three runs scored for the Fighting Tigers.
Centenary returns to action on Saturday, March 12 when it hosts New Paltz for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
