Gass and Guiro Help Baseball Split with SUNY Cobleskill

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Christopher Gass hit a two-run home run and Nick Guiro tossed a complete game to lead the Centenary University baseball team to a doubleheader split with SUNY Cobleskill on Friday at Our Diamond of Dreams.

The Fighting Tigers took game one by a 7-2 score. The Cyclones pounded out a season-high 13 hits in game two for a 7-1 victory and head coach Kevin Sensale's first win in the dugout.

Game One Recap (SUNY Cobleskill Won 7-2):
The Fighting Tigers jumped out to an early lead in this one with four runs in the top of the third. The big blow came off the bat of Eddy Garcia, who hit a two-run home run to left field.

SUNY Cobleskill extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth as Trevor Grieb picked up his second RBI of the day with a single to left.

The Cyclones got one of those runs back in the bottom half of that frame as Chris Hess reached via a two-out single and scored on a wild pitch.

Centenary made it a 5-2 game in the bottom of the fifth. Nicholas Gattuso led off with a triple and came around to score on Jon Fleck's RBI single to center.

SUNY Cobleskill tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth and claimed the 7-2 victory.

Jarrod Williams earned the win for the Fighting Tigers after giving up one run on four hits in four innings of action. Jared Miller took the loss after tossing five innings and surrendering five runs on seven hits.

Gattuso had three hits and a run scored for the Cyclones while Hess added two base knocks and a run scored.

Grieb and Garcia each had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored.

Game Two Recap (Centenary Won 7-1):
The Cyclones got on the board first in game two as Gass launched the first home run of the year by a Cyclone. The ball landed just below the scoreboard in left field and gave Centenary a 2-0 lead.

SUNY Cobleskill got one of those runs back in the top of third on Chris Kordziel's RBI single.

The Cyclones got that run back in the bottom of the frame as Brandon Smith ripped a double down the left field line which scored Paul Links.

Centenary broke things open with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning. Gattuso had an RBI triple while Gass added an RBI double to highlight the inning.

While the offense was doing its thing, Guiro was shutting down the Fighting Tigers on the mound. He limited the SUNY Cobleskill offense to just three hits and just four runners reached second base.

Centenary claimed the 7-1 win.

Guiro tossed the complete game and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out nine batters. Devin Lewis took the loss for SUNY Cobleskill after giving up four runs on eight hits in four innings of action.

Gass was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Cyclones while Smith added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Kordziel had a hit and an RBI for the Fighting Tigers.

Centenary and SUNY Cobleskill are back in action on Saturday, March 5 when they play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
