MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Centenary University softball team was tripped up in its doubleheader at Montclair State University on Wednesday afternoon.
Montclair State scored five runs in the second inning of game one and eventually claimed an 8-0 victory. The Red Hawks scored at least one run in each of the first four innings en route to a 9-2 win in game two.
Game One Recap (Montclair State Won 8-0):
Montclair State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game one.
Jenna Meluso doubled in a pair in the frame while
Kayla Cosentino added a two-run single.
The Red Hawks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and extended their lead to 6-0.
Cosentino's fourth RBI of the game in the sixth inning capped the scoring and gave the home team an 8-0 victory.
Ali Cavallaro earned the win in the circle as she went six innings and allowed just two hits while striking out seven.
Julia Campen took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up five runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Cosentino had three hits and four RBIs for the Red Hawks while Meluso added three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Jenna Glinko and
Jenna Garofalo each recorded a hit for the Cyclones.
Game Two Recap (Montclair State Won 9-2):
A pair of first inning doubles allowed Centenary to grab an early lead in this one.
Courtney Deloughery led off with a double and scored on
Madison Passanante's two-out double.
Montclair State responded by scoring the next nine runs in the game and took a 9-1 advantage after four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Centenary got one back.
Rhiannon Ginnetti led off with a pinch-hit single and came around to score on Glinko's double down the left field line. Unfortunately, that was all the Cyclones could manage as Montclair State earned a 9-2 win.
Kayla Volante earned the win in the circle for the Red Hawks. She allowed two runs on six hits in the complete game effort.
Kelly Ann Earrusso took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up seven runs on nine hits in two innings.
Meluso had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored for Montclair State.
Deloughery had two hits and a run scored for the Cyclones while Glinko and Passanante each had a hit and an RBI.
Centenary is back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 23 when it hosts FDU Florham at 3 p.m.
