Bossert, Elsbree and Brandt Lead Women's Basketball In Loss to Gwynedd Mercy

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. Taylor Bossert, Kaylie Elsbree and Danika Brandt all scored in double figures but a strong fourth quarter allowed Gwynedd Mercy to pull away from the Centenary University women's basketball team for an 80-61 win in Atlantic East play on Monday night.

The two teams went back-and-forth early in the first quarter and found themselves tied at 6-6 with 5:35 showing on the clock.

The Cyclones and Griffins continued to battle before a 9-0 run gave the visitors a 16-9 lead with 41 seconds to go in the period.

A triple from Elsbree in the final 20 seconds pulled the Cyclones to within four, 16-12 at the end of the period.

The Cyclones and Griffins traded buckets to start the second quarter as a Bossert triple pulled the Cyclones to within three, 18-15 with 9:13 to go until the break.

A jumper from Brandt and a traditional three-point play from Brynn Smith gave Centenary a 20-19 edge with 6:31 showing on the clock.

An 11-2 run gave Gwynedd Mercy a 30-22 lead at the 4:10 mark.

The two teams continued to battle as Brandt hit a late jumper but Gwynedd Mercy took a 39-29 lead at the break.

The third period saw both teams go back-and-forth and each scored 18 points in the stanza. Gwynedd Mercy took a 57-47 lead after three periods of play.

Gwynedd Mercy scored the first five points of the fourth period and pushed its lead to 62-47 with 7:57 to go in the game.

Centenary responded with six straight points and cut the lead to 62-53 with 6:03 to play. Bossert connected on a triple while Molly Collins had a traditional three-point play.

The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court as an 8-0 run pushed the Griffins advantage to 77-59 with 1:41 to go in the game.

Gwynedd Mercy eventually closed out the 80-61 win.

Centenary shot 35.4% from the floor and made a season-best 11 three-pointers in the game. Gwynedd Mercy shot 38.6% from the field and made 14 three-pointers in the game. The Griffins held a 47-45 edge in the rebounding battle.

Bossert led Centenary with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists while Elsbree add 11 points and seven rebounds. Brandt came off the bench to pour in 12 points. Salma Eddahiri led the Cyclones on the boards with 11 and chipped in six points.

Lynzie Eggers led Gwynedd Mercy with 25 points while Haley Crossley added 21 points and 20 rebounds.

Centenary is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 12 when it travels to Marywood for a 1 p.m. game.
