Billy Veras broke the Centenary career rebounding mark as the No. 6 Centenary University men's basketball team fell to No. 2 Neumann University 76-61 in the Atlantic East semifinals on Wednesday night.
Veras pulled down eight rebounds in the game which gives him 627 career rebounds. That broke
Andy Charles' mark of 624 set from 2010-15.
Back-to-back buckets from
Tony James gave Neumann an early 8-2 mark at the 17:33 mark.
A triple from
Harrison Lucibello at 13:09 cut the Centenary deficit to three, 12-9.
Isaac Poueriet completed a traditional three-point play at 10:29 and the Cyclones trailed by six, 20-14.
A three-pointer from
Chris LaBelle at 6:30 helped Centenary cut the Neumann lead to 30-25.
The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court. Neumann scored the final five points of the half and took a 39-27 lead at the break.
The Cyclones and Knights traded points to start the second half. LaBelle connected on two of three from the foul line at 18:46 which made it a 43-32 game.
The two teams continued to trade points and battle Poueriet made one of two from the line at 15:27 as Neumann led 47-39.
Lucibello scored five straight points at one point and pulled the Cyclones to within nine, 66-57.
The Cyclones continued to battle until the final whistle as LaBelle had the last basket for the Cyclones. Neumann closed out the 76-61 win.
Centenary shot 42.3% from the field but was 11-for-21 from the foul line. Neumann shot 51.6% from the floor and was 5-for-9 from the foul line. The Knights won the rebounding battle, 38-32.
In the final game of his illustrious career, LaBelle led the Cyclones with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. Lucibello added 14 points and four rebounds while Poueriet had 12 points and nine rebounds. Veras had eight boards in the game.
James finished with 20 points and seven rebounds while
Jalen Vaughns had 20 points and 14 rebounds.
