Jacobs leads Women's Basketball in Atlantic East Opener at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Senior Victoria Jacobs scored a season-high 20 points but a big first quarter allowed Gwynedd Mercy University to grab an early lead and roll to a 93-63 win over the Centenary University women's basketball team in the Atlantic East opener for both squads.

The Cyclones were back on the court for the first time in a month.

Gwynedd Mercy had the hot shooting hand early as the Griffins went 11-for-20 (including eight three-pointers) from the floor in the first 10 minutes. The home team opened up a 30-11 lead after the first period.

A pair of buckets from Jacobs to start the second period made it a 32-15 game with 9:43 to go until the half.

The two teams continued to battle as a jumper from junior Carmen Escano at 4:33 made it a 41-24 game.

A triple from sophomore Camryn Rothery and a bucket from Jacobs made it a 44-30 game with 1:03 until the break.

Gwynedd Mercy took a 47-30 lead at the half.

The Griffins maintained their double-digit advantage throughout the third and fourth periods and eventually settled for the 93-63 win.

Centenary shot 31.9% from the field and was 14-for-24 from the foul line. Gwynedd Mercy shot 36.3% from the field and knocked down 17 three-pointers in the contest. The Griffins held a 56-44 advantage in the rebounding battle.

Jacobs added 10 rebounds and three steals to go with her season-high 20 points. It was the senior's second double-double of the season. Escano contributed 20 points and 17 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. Senior Taylor Bossert added 11 points in the contest.

Lynzie Eggers led Gwynedd Mercy with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

Centenary returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 12 when it travels to Marymount for a 6 p.m. game.
