MADISON, N.J. – Forward Mahir Yilmaz scored his second goal of the season but it was not enough as the Centenary University men's soccer team fell in a tightly contested battle at FDU Florham, 2-1 on Thursday night.
In a back and forth game, it was the Devils striking first with a goal in the seventh minute. Oliver Trujillo settled a long cross in the box that bounced off several players and pushed it home.
The scored remained 1-0 in favor of the home team all the way until the half. The Cyclones had their opportunities in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Cyclones showed a sense of urgency and intensity to start the second half.
Centenary struck for the equalizer in the 57th minute as Yilmaz settled a ball in the box and punched it home for his second goal of the year.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth in a high intensity half.
FDU Florham went back on top in the 74th minute as the Devils were awarded a free kick. Trujillo played a ball into the box and Yariel Parapi played it home for a 2-1 lead.
The Cyclones continued to push down the stretch but were unable to get another one as FDU Florham claimed the 2-1 win.
Tiernan Gray made seven saves to earn the win in goal for the Devils. Paul LiTrenta made six saves in the loss for the Cyclones.
Centenary held a 19-12 advantage in shots in the game and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Centenary is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 18 when it hosts Brooklyn at 2 p.m.
