MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Goalkeeper
Andrew Tarkazikis made 10 saves in his debut for the Centenary University men's soccer team but it was not enough as the Cyclones fell to No. 8 Montclair State on Wednesday afternoon in the season opener.
Montclair State led 1-0 at the half and put up five more goals in the second half en route to the 6-1 victory.
Tarkazikis kept the Cyclones in the action early as he made two big stops in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Montclair State broke through for a goal at 25:20 as
Reed Karsen scored off a corner kick by the Red Hawks.
Montclair State carried that 1-0 advantage into the halftime break. Tarkazikis had three first half saves while midfielder
Kevin Lopez registered a pair of shots on goal for the Cyclones.
The Red Hawks scored the first four goals of the second half and took a 5-0 lead with 65:40 showing on the clock.
Josiah Crawford and
Amer Lukovic each had a goal and an assist for Montclair State during that stretch.
Centenary got on the board at 71:40 as forward
Mahir Yilmaz drove a ball into the lower left corner of the net. That made it a 5-1 game.
Montclair State tacked on one more goal to make the final score, 6-1.
Shane Keenan made three saves to earn the win in goal for Montclair State. Tarkazikis had 10 saves in the start. He gave way to
Paul LiTrenta for the final 14:22 and he made one stop.
Centenary will get back to work and prepare to host King's (Pa.) in their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m.
