Softball Opens CSAC Play with Doubleheader Sweep of Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Centenary University softball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a doubleheader sweep at the University of Valley Forge on Wednesday afternoon.

Third baseman Chloe Wright drove in six runs in game one as the Cyclones claimed a 14-3 victory. Julia Campen tossed a complete game effort in game two as Centenary secured the sweep with the 12-3 win.

Game One Recap (Cyclones Win 14-3): The Cyclones wasted little time in getting on the board in this one as the visitors put four on the board in the top of the first. The big blow came off the bat Wright as she had a two-run single to center.

Valley Forge got two of those runs back in the bottom of the first and cut its deficit in half, 4-2.

Centenary extended its lead to 7-2 with three runs in the top of the second. Designated player Jenna Glinko had an RBI single before Wright drove in two more runs with a double to right.

A pair of Valley Forge errors led to two more runs in the fourth inning and increased the Centenary advantage to 9-2.

The Cyclones scored five times in the top of the fifth. The big hits in the inning came off the bats of Glinko and first baseman Sandra Cosenzo. Glinko had an RBI double to right and Cosenzo contributed a two-run single to center field.

A 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth allowed Centenary to secure the 14-3 win.

Roxana Gonzalez started for the Cyclones and surrendered two unearned runs in 2.2 innings of work. Jessica Hewitt went the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit. Laura Medio took the loss for the Patriots after giving up 14 runs in five innings.

Wright finished with two hits, two runs scored and the six RBIs for the Cyclones while Cosenzo had two hits and three RBIs. Glinko contributed two hits and two RBIs while center fielder Tessa Ferentinos added two hits and three runs scored.

Game Two Recap (Cyclones Win 12-3): Game two saw the Cyclones build their lead over the first three innings of action. Centenary got one run in the first and followed it up with two in the second for the 3-0 advantage. Right fielder Janaya Gaetan had an RBI single for the Cyclones in the second.

Centenary's big inning came in the third as the visitors put six on the board and increased their lead to 9-0. Gaetan had her second RBI single of the contest in the frame.

Valley Forge got one run back in the bottom of the fourth.

However, the Cyclones were not done yet. Second baseman Courtney Deloughery had a two-run double in the fifth and Wright delivered an RBI single as Centenary led 12-2.

Valley Forge tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth and made the final score, 12-3.

Campen did not allow a base hit until the fourth inning in her complete game effort. She struck out two and gave up just the three runs. Medio again took the loss as she gave up nine runs in three innings.

Gaetan led the Cyclones at the plate as she had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored while Deloughery had a hit, two RBIs and two runs scored. Hewitt contributed a hit and two runs scored for the Cyclones.

Centenary has a quick turnaround as the Cyclones host Clarks Summit, tomorrow at 3 p.m.
