Baseball Falls to Wilson in CSAC Action

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University baseball team honored its seniors before falling to Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones recognized Dante Vartolone, Michael Vallario, Jonathan Pezzato and Chris Miller prior to the start of the doubleheader.

Centenary was stymied by Cam Nolet in game one's 11-0 loss. Game two saw the Phoenix break open a one-run game late for an 8-3 victory.

Game One Recap (Wilson Won 11-0): Already leading 2-0, Wilson scored four runs in the top of the fourth and increased its advantage to 6-0. Dean Mercer had a two-run single in the fourth for the Phoenix.

Anthony Vassallo had a single to center in the fifth for the Cyclones but was erased on a fielders choice.

Wilson tacked on five more runs over the final four innings and claimed the 11-0 victory.

Nolet earned the win on the mound after going eight innings and surrendering one hit while striking out seven. Tyler Martinez took the loss for the Cyclones after giving up six runs in four innings.

Gerald Buchanan led Wilson at the plate as he was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, a walk and a run scored.

Vassallo had the only hit for the Cyclones while Jon Fleck reached base twice after being hit by a pitch.

Game Two Recap (Wilson Won 8-3): Wilson jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first. Brandon Cook and Michael Marrale each had RBI singles in the inning.

Centenary got one run back in the bottom of the second. Kris Mankin had a two-out single and came around to score on Kevin Zaccareo Jr.'s base knock.

The Cyclones continued to chip away at their deficit and made it a 4-2 game in the third inning. Paul Links doubled and crossed the plate on Vassallo's two-out single to center.

In the fourth inning, Chris Miller led off with a single and scored from first on Fleck's double to left. That made it a 4-3 game.

Wilson broke open a close contest with four runs in the seventh to make it an 8-3. Buchanan highlighted the action with RBI double and later came around to score.

That proved to be able all the scoring in the contest as Wilson earned the win.

Derek Ivey earned the win in relief as he went 5.2 innings and did not allow a hit while striking out seven. Jared Miller took the loss for the Cyclones as he gave up seven runs on 14 hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Mercer was 4-for-4 with a run scored for the Phoenix.

Chris Miller had two hits and a run scored for the Cyclones while Fleck, Vassallo and Zaccareo Jr. each had a hit and an RBI.

The Cyclones close out the regular season on Saturday, May 1 when they travel to Cairn for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
