HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Freshman
Julia Campen tossed six strong innings in game two to lead the Centenary University softball team to a doubleheader split with Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Friday afternoon.
Game one saw Cairn erase a one-run deficit and battle for a 9-3 game one win. Campen allowed one unearned run in game two to help the Cyclones post the 5-1 victory in game two.
"I thought Julia did a nice job of keeping her composure and keeping them off balance in game two," said head coach
Kim Broking.
Game One Recap (Cairn Won 9-3): The Cyclones jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in game one. Seniors
Tessa Ferentinos and
Courtney Deloughery had an RBI singles in the frame.
Cairn answered right back with two runs in the top of the second to tie the game.
The Cyclones went back to work and took a 3-2 lead on senior
Meghan Hughes' RBI single in the bottom half of that frame.
Cairn took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third as
Emma Holmes had a two-run single to left field.
Cairn added to its lead with five runs in the final two innings of game one for the 9-3 win.
Olivia Nieto had a two-run triple in the sixth and added an RBI single in the seventh to lead the Highlanders.
Krista Earl earned the win in the circle as she gave up three runs on five hits. Senior
Jessica Hewitt took the loss in relief as she surrendered two runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Nieto led Cairn at the plate as she was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Ferentinos had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Cyclones.
Game Two Recap (Cyclones Won 5-1): The Cyclones again went quickly to work and put two on the board in the bottom of the first. Freshman
Toni Cacopardo had an RBI single and later scored on a Highlanders' error.
Centenary pushed its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second as sophomore
Dara Murphy had an RBI single.
While the offense was putting runs on the board, Campen was taking care of the Highlanders at the plate. She limited the opportunities as just one runner reached third through the first four innings.
Centenary added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Hughes had an RBI triple that scored Murphy and later crossed the plate on Ferentinos' groundout.
Cairn broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.
Adrianna Shannon had a sac fly that scored a run.
That was all the Cyclones would allow as they claimed the 5-1 victory.
Campen picked up her third win of the season with six innings of work. She allowed one unearned run on seven hits and struck out five. Senior
Samantha Gabriele pitched the final inning and allowed just one runner.
Kacy Wees took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits.
Hughes had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI out of the leadoff spot for the Cyclones while Cacopardo contributed two hits, one run scored and one RBI.
Theresa Beck had two hits and a run scored for Cairn.
Centenary is back in action tomorrow, April 24 when it travels to St. Elizabeth for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
