HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University softball team battled for a comeback win in game-two to earn a doubleheader split with Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action on Tuesday afternoon.
Game one saw Keystone use a four-run sixth inning to hold off a late charge by the home team for a 14-9 win. In game two, the Cyclones rallied from a 3-1 deficit and fought for a 6-5 win over the Giants.
Game One Recap (Keystone Won 14-9): After a scoreless first inning, both teams got their offenses going in the second through fourth innings. The Cyclones (6-4, 6-2 CSAC) and Giants (5-3, 5-1 CSAC) combined for 18 runs in that three inning stretch.
Keystone kicked the scoring off with three in the top of the second.
Lauryn Rodriguez had a two-run triple in the inning.
Centenary answered right back with two in its half of the inning. First baseman
Sandra Cosenzo lifted a sac fly to left and shortstop
Meghan Hughes added an RBI single.
Keystone put four on the board in the top of the third and three more in the fourth to extend its advantage to 10-3.
The Cyclones pulled to within two, 10-8 as they scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Center fielder
Tessa Ferentinos had an RBI single and designated player
Jenna Glinko lifted a sac fly to center. A two-out error with the bases loaded allowed three Cyclones to score as the home team was running hard on the play.
Keystone increased its advantage with four runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-8 lead. The big hit in that inning came from
Jordan Frye, who had a two-run single.
Centenary got one run back in the bottom half of that frame as Cosenzo had an RBI groundout but that was all and Keystone claimed the 14-9 win.
Marlena Pegula picked up the win with a complete game performance. She allowed nine runs, five of which were earned on nine hits.
Roxana Gonzalez took the loss as she started and went the first 2.1 innings of work.
Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs to lead the Giants at the plate.
Ferentinos and second baseman
Chloe Wright each had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Cyclones. Cosenzo drove in two runs while center fielder
Maggie Lenahan scored two.
Game Two Recap (Cyclones Won 6-5): Centenary got on the board first in this one as Hughes took advantage of a free pass with the bases loaded, which plated Ferentinos.
Keystone immediately responded with three runs in the top of the second. The big hit came from
Brooke Staple, who had a two-run double down the left field line.
The Cyclones battled right back and got one run back in the bottom half of that frame. Ferentinos reached on an error that allowed the second run to score.
Centenary took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. Hughes and catcher
Toni Cacopardo each had RBI singles in the inning.
Two more runs in the fourth increased the home team's advantage to 6-3. The inning was highlighted by Glinko's RBI single to left center.
Single runs from Keystone in the fifth and sixth innings, cut the Centenary lead to one, 6-5.
Keystone had its first runner reach in the top of the seventh but the Cyclones responded with three outs and secured the 6-5 win.
Jessica Hewitt picked up the win after going the first five innings and allowing four runs, one of which was earned. Gonzalez went the final two innings and allowed just one run on two hits.
Courtney Cienki took the loss for Keystone after giving up six runs in four innings.
Cacopardo had two hits and an RBI for the Cyclones while Hughes finished with a hit, two RBIs and a run scored. Ferentinos, who walked twice had two runs scored.
Staple had two hits and three RBIs for Keystone.
The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, April 17 as they travel to Cedar Crest for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
