Softball Falls to No. 8 Kean in Season Opening Doubleheader

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Sophomore Maggie Lenahan and senior Courtney Deloughery each drove in two runs in game two to lead the Centenary University softball team in its season opening doubleheader against No. 8 Kean University at Tannery Field.

The Cougars took game one by a 14-0 margin. In game two, the Cyclones took a 2-1 lead before Kean used a four-run fourth to take the lead back and claim an 8-4 victory.

Game One Recap (Kean Wins 14-0): The Cougars struck for five runs in each of the first two innings to open the early lead. Jenn Majorczak had three RBIs in the first two innings combined.

Senior Tessa Ferentinos had an infield single for the Cyclones in the contest.

Kean added three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for the 14-0 victory.

Taryn DiGiacomo earned the win in the circle for Kean as she allowed one hit and struck out nine. Junior Roxana Gonzalez started for the Cyclones and had two strikeouts in two innings while surrendering 10 runs. Freshman Kelly Ann Earrusso had a solid debut as she retired all three batters she faced in the fifth for the Cyclones.

Majorczak was 4-for-4 with four RBIs for Kean.

Ferentinos led the Cyclones with the infield single.

Game Two Recap (Kean Wins 8-4): Kean struck first in game two with a run in the top of the first.

The Cyclones broke through in the scoring column in the bottom of the second. A pair of walks put two runners on with two outs for the home team. Lenahan then stroked a double to left field that scored junior Janaya Gaetan and freshman Toni Cacopardo. That gave the Cyclones a 2-1 advantage in the contest.

Kean used a four-run top of the fourth inning to retake the lead, 5-2. The big hit came from Julie Raba, who had a two run single.

The Cougars added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh for an 8-2 advantage.

The Cyclones had one more rally in them as they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Deloughery dropped a well place single down the right field to score Ferentinos and senior Meghan Hughes on the play. That made the final score of game two, 8-4.

Karly Messina earned the win for Kean as she gave up four runs and struck out six in a complete game effort. Freshman Julia Campen went six innings in her first appearance for the Cyclones and gave up six runs, two of which were earned. Senior Samantha Gabriele pitched the seventh for the Cyclones.

Raba had two RBIs to lead Kean.

Lenahan finished with two hits and two RBIs for the Cyclones.

Centenary is back in action when it travels to Montclair State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 23 at 3 p.m.
