HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Double-double performances from
McKayla Mooney and
Salma Eddahiri helped the Centenary University women's basketball team battle for a 78-64 win over Penn State Abington on Wednesday night.
Mooney tallied a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds while Eddahiri contributed 11 points and a season-high 16 rebounds as the Cyclones won their third straight game.
Centenary pushed out to a 9-5 lead in the first quarter as
Kayliee Elsbree connected on a three-pointer at 7:01.
A 7-0 run that featured four points from Eddahiri and a triple from
Taylor Bossert extended the Centenary advantage to 18-11 with 58 seconds left on the clock.
Centenary eventually took a 20-16 lead after one period of play.
A pair of three-pointers from Bossert and a traditional three-point play from Mooney pushed the Centenary lead to 29-20 with 8:23 left until the half.
A lay-up from
Victoria Jacobs at the 6:51 mark gave the Cyclones a 36-20 advantage.
PSU Abington finished the second period on an 11-2 run but Centenary took a 38-31 lead at the break.
Cassie Tavormina led the Nittany Lions with eight points during that stretch.
The Nittany Lions and Cyclones went back-and-forth to start the third quarter. Four straight points from Mooney gave Centenary a 47-37 lead with 6:01 remaining in the period.
A lay-up from
Angela Sanders at 1:42 cut the Centenary lead to five, 53-48.
The Cyclones scored five of the final 10 points in the third period and held a 58-53 lead.
Carmen Escano scored eight of the first 10 points in the fourth quarter and helped Centenary take a 66-55 lead with 7:03 to go in the game.
A jumper from Mooney at 4:23 put the home team on top, 70-59.
The two teams battled down the stretch as Centenary secured the 78-64 win.
Centenary shot 44.1% from the field and made 13-of-17 chances from the foul line. PSU Abington shot 37% from the field and was 5-for-10 from the line. Centenary held a 52-37 advantage in the rebounding battle.
The Cyclones had five players score in double figures in the contest. Mooney was aided in her season-high 20 points by going 8-for-14 from the field. In addition to her 11 points and 16 rebounds, Eddahiri added six assists.
Bossert contributed 13 points and three assists while Escano had 13 points and six rebounds. Jacobs added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Sanders led PSU Abington with 23 points and 17 rebounds.
Centenary is back in action when it hosts Five Towns on Friday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.
