Men's Basketball Makes It Three in a Row With an 97-83 Win Over John Jay

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – All five starters scored at least 12 points to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to an 97-83 win over John Jay College on Monday night.

Forwards D'Angelo Blackmond and Billy Veras each posted a double-double to lead the Cyclones to their third straight win.

Trailing 8-6 early in the first half, Centenary scored 16 of the next 19 points and took a 22-11 lead. Guard Harrison Lucibello and Veras each dropped in a pair of three-pointers during that run that carried the Cyclones to the 14:16 mark.

The two teams continued to battle as a jumper from Veras at 9:24 gave the home team a 30-17 lead.

A jumper from Lucibello at 6:55 pushed the Centenary advantage to 38-22.

Centenary closed the first half on a 7-4 run and took a 47-39 lead at the break. Guard Chris LaBelle had a traditional three-point play during that stretch.

The Cyclones scored the first eight points of the second half and quickly pushed their lead to 55-39 with 17:22 to play. Blackmond had four points during that stretch.

A pair of free throws from Veras and a jumper from LaBelle gave Centenary a 65-47 lead with 12:51 remaining in the game.

Four straight points from Lucibello put the Cyclones ahead, 73-55 with 9:19 showing on the clock.

The two teams continued to battle on both ends of the court as Centenary used a 7-0 run to take a 86-66 lead with 4:41 to go in the contest.

A pair of free throws at 1:36 from Angel Rivera pulled John Jay to within 11, 91-80. That was as close as the Bloodhounds would get the rest of the way. Centenary secured the 97-83 win for its third straight win.

Centenary shot 48.5% from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers. John Jay shot 38.5% from the field and made 20-of-24 chances from the foul line. The Bloodhounds held a slight 48-46 edge in the rebounding battle.

Veras led the Cyclones with 25 points and 12 rebounds for his third straight double-double and fifth game this season with 20 or more points. Blackmond had 13 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season.

LaBelle contributed 19 points and seven assists while Lucibello had a career and season-high 18 points. Guard Tyler White added 12 points to the cause.

Rivera led John Jay with a game-high 31 points.

Centenary is back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 8 when it hosts Lehman at 8 p.m.
