HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – All five starters scored in double figures but it was not enough for the Centenary University men's basketball team in a hard fought 92-87 loss to Lehman College on Wednesday evening.
The two teams went back-and-forth to start the first period. With the contest tied at 11-11, Lehman scored five of the next seven points and took a 16-13 lead with 12:55 remaining in the half.
Gian Batista scored all five of the points in that stretch.
The two teams continued to battle as a three-pointer from
Harrison Lucibello at the 7:58 mark made it a 23-20 game in favor of the visitors.
A jumper from
Will Feldman at 5:22 made it a 29-23 lead for the Lightning. Buckets from
Chris LaBelle and
Kevin DeRaffele pulled the Cyclones to within two, 29-27 with 4:41 left in the half.
The two teams traded baskets before a pair of free throws from
Mo Idrissou with 14 seconds showing on the clock sent Lehman into the half with a 42-36 lead.
After Lehman scored the first basket of the second half, the Cyclones responded with an 8-0 run and tied the game at 44-44. Lucibello and
Billy Veras connected on three-pointers in that stretch.
A triple from
Tyler White at 15:14 tied the game at 52-52.
A three-pointer from Veras at 14:21 gave Centenary a 57-55 edge.
The Cyclones and Lightning continued to battle on each end of the floor. A jumper from
Isaiah Geathers gave Lehman a 69-63 lead with 11 minutes to go in the contest.
Lehman maintained a lead between three and 10 points over the final stretch of the game. Centenary cut the lead to four on a jumper from LaBelle with five seconds left but couldn't get any closer as Lehman claimed the win.
Centenary shot 37.5% from the field and made 17-of-26 chances from the foul line. Lehman shot 53.2% from the field and was 17-for-25 from the foul line. Lehman had a 50-40 edge in the rebounding battle.
LaBelle and Lucibello each tossed in 18 points to lead Centenary. LaBellle also contributed six rebounds and six assists.
D'Angelo Blackmond contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth straight double-double. White added 16 points and four assists while Veras had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Geathers led Lehman with 25 points and six rebounds.
Centenary wraps up a busy stretch as it hosts Five Towns on Friday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m.
