HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The frontcourt tandem of
Billy Veras and
D'Angelo Blackmond combined for 40 points, 22 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Centenary University men's basketball team to an 80-62 win over Rosemont College on Saturday afternoon.
In addition, graduate student
Chris LaBelle contributed 16 points which brought his career total to 1,614 points. With that performance, LaBelle moved past
Rashaan Spencer (2014-18) and into sole possession of second place on the career scoring list at Centenary.
Centenary ran its way out to an 11-2 lead as LaBelle connected on a lay-up at 16:06.
The Cyclones pushed the lead to 17-2 on back-to-back buckets from Veras, the second coming at the 13:07 mark.
The two teams continued to battle as a traditional three-point play from Blackmond at 9:06 gave the home team a 24-7 edge in the contest.
A Veras lay-up at 3:31 gave Centenary a 34-15 lead.
A 12-0 run by Rosemont cut the Centenary lead to seven, 34-27 with 1:16 to go until the half.
Kyree Myers had seven points during that scoring spurt.
A late bucket from Veras sent the Cyclones into the half with a 36-27 lead.
Centenary opened the second half on a 7-3 run and took a 43-30 lead with 18:03 to go in the game. LaBelle had five in that stretch.
The Cyclones and Ravens went back-and-forth as a lay-up from Blackmond at 13:06 put the home team up 52-36.
A three-pointer from senior
Harrison Lucibello at the 8:10 mark allowed the Cyclones to take a 63-51 lead in the game.
The two teams continued to battle as a pair of free throws from Veras at 4:04 extended the advantage to 71-57.
A late jumper from sophomore
Joe Birch closed out an 80-62 win for the Cyclones.
Centenary shot 47.7% from the field and went 14-for-18 from the foul line. Rosemont shot 31.2% from the field and was 9-for-12 from the foul line. Centenary held a 49-42 edge in the rebounding battle.
Veras powered the Centenary attack with 25 points and 11 rebounds. It was Veras' second straight double-double and third of the season. He has now scored 20+ points in four of the last five games.
Blackmond added 15 points and 11 rebounds for his third straight double-double and fourth of the season. In addition to his 16 points, LaBelle added six rebounds and six assists. Lucibello contributed eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
Myers led Rosemont with 17 points.
Centenary is right back at it as the Cyclones host John Jay on Monday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
