ARLINGTON, Va. – Freshman
Cassandra Ferguson's goal in the 86th minute lifted the No. 6 Centenary University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at No. 3 Marymount University in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament on Monday afternoon.
"I am so proud of the effort from these young ladies," said head coach
Kevin Davies. "They came back from a goal down for the second time in two days and thankfully we completed the job today. It says a lot of the character of this team to have played two tough games in less than 72 hours. I could not have asked for more from them and they could not have given more."
The first half was pretty evenly matched as both teams registered three shots in a 0-0 period. Junior
Chelsea Estacio had two saves for the Cyclones while fellow junior
Brelyn Cusano had a shot slip just over the crossbar high.
Marymount found its way on to the scoreboard early in the second period. In the 58th minute,
Sita Nair was able to corral a rebound off the keeper and put a high shot into the corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Centenary was able to answer back at 62:48 as the Cyclones were awarded a free kick following a yellow card on the Marymount keeper. Senior
Jill Pullis took the initial shot but it bounced off the wall. She collected the rebound and launched a high shot that hit off the keeper's fingers and went in.
Centenary took the lead in the 86th minute. The Cyclones took a corner kick and Ferguson's first shot was saved by the Marymount keeper. However she was able to pick up the rebound and poked it past the keeper for team and Atlantic East leading 12th goal of the year.
Neither team was able to find the back-of-the-net over the closing minutes and Centenary claimed the 2-1 upset win. Â
Estacio made two saves in the first 75:09 for the Cyclones. Graduate student
Chelsea Cordice played the final 14:51 and did not need to make a save while picking up the win.
Grace Needham had one save for Marymount.
The Cyclones await the results of the Monday night's other first round games to determine who they will travel to on Wednesday, Nov. 3 for the semifinals. Stay with CentenaryCyclones.com for more details.
