GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman
Cassandra Ferguson's first career hat trick led the Centenary University women's soccer team to a 4-0 win at Gwynedd Mercy University in Atlantic East Conference action on Wednesday night.
The two teams battled early in the first half before Ferguson helped the Cyclones break through in the 21st minute. Junior
Brelyn Cusano fed Ferguson with a long lead pass down the far side and she booted it home.
Centenary carried that 1-0 advantage into the half, thanks in part to three saves from junior
Chelsea Estacio.
Centenary added to it's lead at the 63:27 mark as Cusano found sophomore
Salma Eddahiri for a breakaway. Eddahiri beat the goal for her seventh goal of the season a 2-0 Cyclones advantage.
Just under 10 minutes later, it was Cusano and Ferguson connecting again. Ferguson's second of the day and ninth season put the visitors up 3-0.
The Cusano and Ferguson connection was not done yet. At 80:51, Cusano found Ferguson with a solid pass and she knocked it home for her third of night. That secured the 4-0 win for the Cyclones.
Estacio needed to make just the three first half saves to secure the win in goal. It was Estacio's first shutout of the season and eighth of her career. She moves into a tie with
Kaitlin Marold for fifth on the career shutouts list at Centenary.
Molly Flemming made 10 saves in the loss for Gwynedd Mercy.
Ferguson led the Cyclones with three goals in the game. She has scored multiple goals in a game three times this season. Cusano tied the school record with four assists in the contest. She joins
Jen Dexter (vs. Old Westbury in 2010) as the only Cyclones to post four helpers in a contest.
Centenary wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 when it hosts Cabrini at 1:30 p.m.
