HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Marymount University scored a goal in each half and held off a hard charge by the Centenary University women's soccer team for a 2-0 win in the Atlantic East opener for both squads.
It was the Saints striking first early in this one. Marymount's
Sita Nair made a long run and beat the Centenary keeper for the goal at 7:06.
Both teams had their chances in the remainder of the first half but neither side was able to capitalize and Marymount took the 1-0 edge at the half.
Marymount added to its lead in the 61st minute as
Laney Placido connected off a pass from Nair for the 2-0 lead.
Centenary had several chances in the final 20 minutes of the game but
Grace Needhman made seven saves in that stretch to preserve the lead and secure the win for the Saints.
Needham finished with 13 saves to earn the win in goal for Marymount. Senior
Rachel Colt made three saves in the first half for the Cyclones while junior
Chelsea Estacio made six saves in relief action.
Centenary is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 6 when it travels to Rosemont for a 6 p.m. game.
