Women's Basketball Tripped Up by Saint Elizabeth, 77-69

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Four players scored in double figures, but it was not enough as the Centenary University women's basketball team fell at the College of Saint Elizabeth, 77-69 on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

The Eagles opened up an 11-4 lead with 6:19 to go in the first quarter on Kamani Williams' lay-up.

Centenary responded with a 12-2 run of its own and took a 16-13 lead with 1:42 left on the clock. Freshman Carmen Escano scored four points during that stretch.

Saint Elizabeth briefly tied the game at 16-16 before the Cyclones scored the final five points of the period. Freshman Kayla Burnett scored all five of those points as the visitors took a 21-16 lead after one.

Sophomore Jessica McKenzie scored Centenary's first four points of the second period and helped the Cyclones take a 25-22 lead with 7:59 to go until the half.

The Cyclones extended their lead to 29-22 on a lay-up from sophomore Victoria Jacobs at 6:11.

Saint Elizabeth scored 15 of the next 17 points and took a 37-31 advantage with 2:39 showing on the clock. Rakiyah Sellers drained a pair of three-pointers during that stretch.

Jacobs and McKenzie scored the final two baskets of the period and the Cyclones went into the half trailing by just two, 37-35.

The third period started much the same way the second period had ended. Baskets from McKenzie and Jacobs gave the Cyclones a 39-37 edge at the 8:57 mark.

Eight straight points gave Saint Elizabeth a 45-39 advantage with 7:09 remaining in the stanza.

The two teams traded points as the Eagles extended their lead to 52-41 on a three-pointer from Maria DeVincenzo at 2:18.

The Cyclones and Eagles continued to battle as the home team took a 59-48 lead after three periods of play.

Saint Elizabeth extended its lead to 69-50 on a Williams' lay-up at 7:06 of the fourth quarter.

Centenary scored nine of the next 11 points and made it a 71-59 game with 5:02 to play in the contest. Sophomore Taylor Bossert scored four points during that stretch.

A Kamille Jacobs' lay-up at 3:58 put Saint Elizabeth ahead, 75-59.

Centenary closed the game on a 10-2 run, but it was not enough as the Eagles earned the 77-69 win. Bossert scored seven points during that closing stretch.

Saint Elizabeth shot 38.6 percent from the field and was 14-for-19 from the foul line. Centenary posted a 44.8 field goal percentage and was 15-for-19 from the foul line. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 42-39.

Bossert led the Cyclones with 15 points and three assists while Burnett had 13 points and six assists. McKenzie had her sixth double-double of the season for the Cyclones with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Escano added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Sellers led Saint Elizabeth with 22 points and five assists.

The Cyclones are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they host Rosemont at 12 p.m.
