Women's Basketball Rolls to 80-56 Win Over Wilson

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Centenary University women's basketball team opened up a 15-point advantage after one period and rolled to an 80-56 win over Wilson College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones were sporting yellow shoelaces and special warm-up shirts on Saturday as part of their "Hoops for Maddy" event. Centenary teamed up with the Hackettstown Middle School Student Council to raise funds for Maddy Holloway, a local middle school student who is currently battling Ewing sarcoma.

The Cyclones picked up their second straight win and fourth in the last five games.

"It was nice to see the team execute what we do in practice, play together and win together," said head coach Rose Haller.

The Cyclones quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a jumper from freshman Janne Rowan at 7:02.

Wilson got on the board with a pair of free throws at 6:44.

Centenary responded with a 12-0 run, which extended its advantage to 18-2 with 2:08 remaining in the first period. Sophomore Taylor Bossert struck for five points in that stretch.

The Cyclones eventually took a 20-5 lead after 10 minutes of action.

Centenary opened the second period on a 7-2 run as sophomore Jessica McKenzie's lay-up at 6:59 gave the home team a 27-7 lead.

Sophomore Carly Tarnowski connected on a lay-up at 3:13 which allowed the Cyclones to extend their lead to 37-18.

Junior Danika Brandt sunk a three-pointer with 54 seconds showing on the clock and the Cyclones took a 43-20 lead at the half.

Bossert sank her fourth three-pointer of the game at the 6:02 mark of the third quarter as Centenary took a 52-31 advantage.

Back-to-back baskets from freshman Kayla Burnett pushed the Cyclone lead to 64-35 with 25 seconds showing on the clock.

The home team led 64-35 after three periods of play.

Centenary scored eight of the first 15 points in the fourth quarter and led 70-42 with 7:23 to go in the game. Sophomore Victoria Jacobs and freshman Carmen Escano each scored four points during that spurt.

The Cyclones took their largest lead of the game, 74-44 on a Jacobs' jumper at 5:39.

The two teams traded points over the final five minutes as Centenary claimed the 80-56 win.

Centenary shot 48.5 percent from the field and knocked down seven three-pointers. Wilson posted a 31.7 field goal percentage and made seven three-pointers. Centenary won the rebounding battle, 49-31.

Bossert had a team-high 16 points and two assists for the Cyclones. Jacobs added 15 points and nine rebounds while McKenzie added 13 points and seven rebounds. Rowan contributed 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Jordyn Day led Wilson with 18 points.

The Cyclones are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 29 when they travel to Saint Elizabeth for a 6 p.m. game.
