Chris LaBelle and graduate student
Tom Weiler combined for 39 points, but it was not enough as the Centenary University men's basketball team fell to Rosemont College, 98-84 on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
Rosemont had the hot shooting hand in the first half of the contest. The Ravens made 20-of-40 field goals including 11 from behind the arc as the home team opened up a 51-34 lead.
Each team scored seven points in the first two plus minutes of the second half as Rosemont led 58-41. Weiler had a three-pointer for the Cyclones during that stretch.
A pair of free throws from
Chris Briner pushed the Rosemont lead to 65-44 with 16 minutes to go in the contest.
Centenary scored nine of the next 12 points in the game and made it a 68-53 game with 13:21 showing on the clock. LaBelle scored three points during that stretch.
Six straight points from
Marlon Sharpton gave the Ravens a 76-54 advantage at the 10:51 mark.
A 6-0 run by the Cyclones pulled the visitors to within 14, 78-64 with 6:56 remaining in the game. Sophomore
Harrison Lucibello scored four points during that stretch.
The Cyclones and Ravens traded points before a 7-0 run from Centenary made it a 10-point game, 83-73. Junior
Mike Young knocked down a three-pointer in that scoring spurt.
A lay-up from sophomore
Billy Veras pulled Centenary to within nine, 86-77 with 3:19 on the clock.
The two teams continued to battle and trade points as a lay-up from
Osaze Thornton gave the home team a 92-80 edge.
A pair of free throws from Weiler at the one-minute mark made it a 92-82 game.
Rosemont went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final minute of play to secure the 98-84 win.
Rosemont finished the game shooting 44.9 percent from the field and made 14 three-pointers. The Ravens also knocked down 22-of-31 from the foul line. Centenary posted a 43.1 field goal percentage and was 27-for-32 from the foul line. The Cyclones won the rebounding battle, 47-33.
LaBelle led the Cyclones with 22 points, six rebounds and four assists. LaBelle was 14-for-16 from the foul line, it was the eighth time this season he has made 10 or more foul shots in a game. LaBelle's first free throw gave him 400 points on the season. He has now scored 400 points in three straight seasons.
Weiler finished with 17 points and six rebounds while freshman
D'Angelo Blackmond had a team-high 14 rebounds.
Thornton led Rosemont with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
The Cyclones return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when they host Wilson at 3 p.m.
