Second Half Comeback Powers Women's Basketball Past Cairn, 60-41

LANGHORNE, Pa. – A balanced scoring attack led the Centenary University women's basketball team to a 60-41 comeback win at the Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play Saturday afternoon. Freshman Carmen Escano and sophomore Taylor Bossert combined for 21 points in the win. That duo led the effort that saw nine of the 10 Cyclones who appeared in the game score at least two points.

"It was a team victory today," said head coach Rose Haller. "Everyone did the job they needed to today."

Trailing 3-0 in the first period, the Cyclones went on a 10-0 run and took a seven-point advantage, 10-3 with 4:37 showing on the clock. Sophomore Jessica McKenzie had four points during that stretch.

Cairn responded by scoring seven of the final nine points in the period, but the Cyclones led 12-10 after one period of action.

Centenary scored the first basket of the second period as freshman Janne Rowan had a put back basket to make it a 14-10 game.

The Highlanders scored 16 of the next 18 points and took a 26-16 lead with 1:05 to go until the half. Dakota Hitchner tallied nine points in that run for Cairn.

The Cyclones scored the final three points of the stanza including a bucket from junior Danika Brandt. Cairn took a 26-19 lead at the break.

Hitchner scored four of the first six points in the third quarter as the Highlanders led 30-21 with 7:12 to go in the period.

Escano hit a lay-up at 6:55, which started a 12-1 run by the Cyclones. That scoring spurt by the visitors turned a nine-point deficit into a two-point advantage, 33-31 with 1:08 showing on the clock.

Victoria Stum connected on a lay-up for Cairn with 47 seconds to go in the period which tied the game at 33-33.

Bossert's three-pointer with four seconds left gave Centenary a 36-33 lead after three periods of play.

Centenary scored the first six points of the fourth quarter and pushed its lead to 42-33 with 7:24 to go in the game.

The two teams traded points as a bucket from Brandt gave the Cyclones a 46-37 edge with 5:55 showing on the clock.

Centenary went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final two minutes of the game to seal the 60-41 win. Bossert was 4-for-4 during that stretch.

Centenary shot 31.4 percent from the field and was 12-for-16 from the charity stripe. Cairn posted a 26.9 field goal percentage and was 10-for-12 from the foul line. The Cyclones dominated the rebounding battle, 51-38.

Escano posted her third double-double of the season as she led the Cyclones with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Bossert had 10 points while McKenzie had eight points, eight rebounds and five steals.
